Recently, I’ve had the opportunity to personally reconnect with the Museum of Making Music’s membership program. I’ve spent time reviewing processes, answering member questions and looking closely at the benefits we offer. But more importantly, I’ve taken the time to reflect on the deeper meaning of membership.
I take very seriously the decision that one makes to become a member. It’s not a casual act, and it’s more than a transaction or a category in our database. It’s a deliberate expression of belief in what we do and in what we have to offer. Each time someone joins, it feels like a vote of confidence as if someone is saying, “Yes, this matters.” Because of that, I feel a deep sense of responsibility to ensure that every member feels welcomed, valued and genuinely connected to the heart of the Museum.
Of course, membership includes tangible benefits—unlimited admission, guest passes, store discounts, exclusive invitations and more. And our Track-level memberships offer even more, including tickets and reserved seating at concerts and private museum tours. But I feel that the most meaningful benefit may be something broader and perhaps less easily defined: the sense of belonging. Being a member means being part of a community. In our particular community, that means placing value on musical expression, creativity and the power of music to connect across perceived boundaries.
From our side, there is a tangible benefit as well. Membership revenue helps support our programs and activities. But the true value lies in what that support represents: a vote of confidence that makes everything we mean something. From exhibitions and concerts to school tours and community days, our members inspire us to keep moving forward sharing stories, creating engaging experiences and welcoming new visitors and future members into our community.
I do want to emphasize that we understand membership isn’t for everyone, and there are many reasons why someone may choose not to join. And we want everyone to know that whether you’re a member, a first-time visitor, a concertgoer, or a curious passerby, our message is the same: we welcome you and value your participation, whether it’s for an hour, an evening, a year, a decade, or more.
Sometimes during my introductory comments at concerts, I share with the audience that we’re doing the event for them. And I always hope they understand how sincerely and how literally I mean those words. You are the reason we do this work. Your presence and participation give meaning to everything we create.
