The Museum of Making Music's Summer Sounds Series kicks off with Special Edition Orchestra. The “big band that swings” performs music from the 1940s and 50s including best-selling songs from legendary bandleaders Glen Miller, Benny Goodman, Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Artie Shaw and more. Presented by John Hall and conducted by Dave Murray, the Special Edition Orchestra is comprised of professional musicians and vocalists from the San Diego area.
For this performance, the band highlights music from Glen Miller’s and Artie Shaw’s military big bands and gives a special salute to composer and arranger Sammy Nestico. Nestico, a Carlsbad resident, served in the Army in WW2 and arranged music for the Count Basie Orchestra, the U.S. Air Force Band and the U.S. Marine Band. Other program highlights include “America,” “Stars and Stripes Forever,” and a special medley saluting all of the branches of the United States Armed Services.
