Renovation Week 2: Spaces Taking Shape

Created on Friday, June 17, 2011 - 1:37 pm
Written by B.J. Morgan, Museum Staff

We're seeing a lot of changes at the end of Week 2. The transformation is amazing to witness.  The pace at which it proceeds is just as amazing!

Old walls are completely gone.  New walls have been created.  Drywall has been patched and sanded.  The front desk has been refinished and reconfigured for its new location in the Museum Store. The Special Exhibition Area is very well defined.  Channels have gone in for the new interactive cabling needs.

I snapped a quick photo of one of the wiring conduits as it will be filled with concrete in a few short days.  It'll be the last time anyone sees this internal "artery" ever again.  In fact, walking through the renovation space in its current state gives the impression of observing a huge surgical procedure.  There is a sense of anatomic systems: the skeletal strength of the steel studs, the vascular network of cables and electrical systems, and the dermal qualities of bare drywall, that—though not pretty to look at—provides an insightful perspective to the core functionality of the space as a whole.

Next week brings the promise of paint!
