Title One Fieldtrips

Museum tours take students on a journey through the last century of American popular music.  From the early work of John Philip Sousa and his marching band to the rock and roll sound of the electric guitar, students learn about the innovations and people who shaped popular music.

The Museum is committed to reaching students from low-income areas who may not be receiving music education in the classroom. We understand that it’s not financially feasible for many schools to take a field trip the Museum so we created the Title One Fieldtrip program to reach schools that serve these students. This initiative, for third grade classes from Title One designated schools, brings these classes to the Museum at no charge.

By participating in the program, classes receive free bus transportation, a Museum tour, and a facilitator-led drum circle.  We welcome over 3,000 third graders each year for this valuable musical experience.  These are students who would otherwise not be able to participate in Museum programs.

How the Program is Funded

The Title One Fieldtrip Program is funded in part by a grant from the Leichtag Family Foundation as well as public supporters from the community.

Does My Class Qualify?

To qualify for the program, you must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Your elementary school is designated as a Title 1 school by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • You teach third grade.
  • Your school is part of one of the following districts:
    • Carlsbad
    • Encinitas
    • Escondido
    • Fallbrook
    • Oceanside
    • San Marcos
    • Vista

While we wish we could welcome all students to the Museum at no charge, our funding limits the number of students that can participate.  By limiting the program to third grade, we can impact a new group of students each year.  The selected districts are located in North San Diego County and are in close proximity to the Museum.  If you do not meet the above criteria you are still welcome to book a field trip with your own transportation and will receive a group admission rate.

How Do I Participate?

Contact the Museum at 760-438-5996, ext 219 for more information or to book your tour.  We will do our best to accomodate your class but availability cannot be guaranteed.

Teacher Testimonials

Here’s what teachers are saying about the Title One School Tour program:

“We do not have enough quality music education.  Your museum really provided a great experience.  The scholarship you provided was what made it possible for us to attend.  Thank you!”

“It is a great experience for the kids. Since the budget cuts many of the arts have been eliminated.”

“We loved how organized the presentation was and many students left expressing their interest in music and wanting to play music.”

“The free transportation is huge for our school.  Thank you!”

“The students from our school do not have many enlightenment opportunities.  This experience at the museum was particularly meaningful.”

“This great exposure to music is sorely lacking in our curriculum.  Thank you for making this available!”
